On January 26th, I visited the “FELIX VALLOTTON-NOIR ET BLANC” exhibition at the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum in Marunouchi, Tokyo. (In French, “noir” and "blanc" mean black and white, respectively.) Despite my busy schedule, I decided to go to the show because the museum will be closing from April 4th 2023 to autumn 2024 for repairs.
先日、東京駅の三菱一号館美術館で開催された、「ヴァロットン−黒と白」展を見に行きました。
正直、最近非常に忙しく、行くかどうか迷ったのですが、ヴァロットンへの興味だけではなく、私の大好きな三菱一号館美術館が2023年4月10日から2024年秋頃まで修繕工事のため長期休館するという話を聞いて、これは行かねば！と思いまして、なんとかスケジュールをやりくりして行きました！
Felix Vallotton is a Swiss-born artist, known primarily for his woodcuts, who worked in Paris during the late 19th century. I was previously unfamiliar with his work, but was totally blown away by his prints.
ヴァロットンは19世紀末のパリで活躍したスイス生まれの画家で、その作品は主に木版画で制作されています。実は私も今回の展覧会まで、彼の存在を知らなかったのですが、いやはや、非常に素晴らしい展示でした！！
The majority of his prints depict people in Paris and are monochromatic. I was especially drawn to the beautiful balance of black and white, strong compositional elements, humor, and mystery of his images. His prints are highly attractive and polished. Some of his prints also deal with subjects like World War I and various conflicts between men and women, adding a layer of complexity to his work.
主に、パリの人々の姿が彼の作品のモチーフなのですが、版画は墨一色刷り。どの作品も白と黒のバランスの素晴らしさ、構図の巧みさ、そして何と言ってもどこかユーモラスで飄々とした雰囲気が魅力的でした。しかし、時に、男女間の疑念や戦争をモチーフにした作品もあり、単に「可愛らしい」だけでは終わっていなかったですね。
I also loved the way the exhibition was curated, and the charmingly simple animations based on his prints. My favorite of these was a small animation of owls projected on a corner of the museum.
展示構成も非常に素晴らしく、会場のあちらこちらで、彼の作品をシンプルなアニメーションにした映像作品が上映されており、特に、壁の一隅にさりげなく投影されたフクロウのアニメーションが気に入りました。
I feel that prints are rather different from other types of art, like painting or sculpture. While oil paintings directly show and express the movements and intentions of the artist, woodcuts, by contrast, tend to feel more distant, and to some extent remove the artist's "hand." They have less physical presence, one might say.
版画作品というのは、油絵や彫刻といったファインアートと違って、版から、刷り出された紙を鑑賞者は、見ます。油絵などが作者の手の動き、意図をダイレクトに表しているのに対し、版画は版木から紙へ刷るというワンアクションが間に挟まっている故に、「公共性」「ちょっとしたよそよそしさ」を纏っているように思えます。
ファインアートに比べ、生々しさが無い。ある意味、安心して鑑賞することができる気がします。
There was only one original printing block on display--probably a very valuable item. In the past, printing blocks were typically discarded (as was also customary in Japan). As a result, it is difficult to find such blocks today. I was moved by Vallotton's original block. The large areas of black seemed to embody his passion, and the fine curved lines, his precision, breath, and inner conflicts. It was exciting being able to see such an important part of his process. (Pictures were not allowed, but the original block can be seen here )
今回、会場にポツンと一つだけ展示されていたヴァロットンのオリジナル版木がありました。これは間違いなく非常に貴重なものでしょう。浮世絵も、版木はどんどん捨てられ、ほとんど現存しておりません。
今回の展示、どの作品もとても魅力的だったのですが、私の心を一番動かしたのは、このたった一つの版木でした。（これは撮影禁止だったのですが、こちらのリンク先のCHAPTER1のところに写真があります。是非、ご確認ください。）
この版木からは、大胆に残された黒刷りの部分からは彼の情熱、非常に細い彫り線からは彼の慎重さ、そして、ヴァロットンの息遣いや作品に対する葛藤までも伝わってきました。
とても完成度が高く、クールに見える彼の作品の舞台裏を垣間見ることができ、とても感動しました。
Later, at the gift shop, I went on a bit of a shopping spree, buying everything from tiny magnets to large posters of the artist's work. I'm very excited to put one of his posters up on the wall in my room. Overall, I was very pleased with my first art experience of 2023.
最後のギフトショップではどのグッズもとても可愛らしく、マグネットやTシャツなど、散財してしまいました！特にポスターはこれから部屋に飾るのがとても楽しみです。
