Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum

The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum is located in Musashi-Koganei, Tokyo. Visiting the museum is like stepping into a time portal. At the museum, you can see (and walk around in!) many traditional Japanese buildings.

The museum also has modern buildings which were taken apart, transported, and reassembled. I especially recommend the house of the architect Kunio Maekawa, once a pupil of the great Le Corbusier. Kunio Maekawa did not just design houses. I discussed, for example, his "ROHM Theatre Kyoto" in an earlier article. House of Kunio Maekawa was his own house in Shinagawa, built in 1942. It is truly my dream house. I love the building's interior features. Everything in it is extremely refined and polished.

In addition to such buildings, the museum has faithful reconstructions of old shops--a clothing shop, a soy sauce shop, and even a public bath!

I often wonder how people are able to reconstruct buildings so accurately. I can't imagine how much time and care goes into such projects.
