Yang Fudong / "The colored Sky: New Woman II"

In 2018, My first seeing art exhibition is Yang Fudong’s “The colored Sky: New Woman II” at Espace Lois Vuitton in Omotesando Tokyo. Yang Fudong is Chinese artist born in 1971. He is a man of considerable importance in Chinese art scene.

“The colored Sky: New Woman II” is a film art work. Honestly, I am not good at seeing this kind of art. Because almost all of the art films are abstract expression and sound, and it requires me to be patient to see it. But “New Woman” is different. There are five screens. And these images are so beautiful and change one after another. You also can enjoy watching it without thinking anything. But I try to analyze this film installation.

The stage has a beach setting, it's beautiful and fantastic. It might be twilight. Sky is blue and a part turns to red. And then, you realize it’s artificial one. Some women seem having fun while playing at the beach. Their swimming wears are somehow retro. Colored and semitransparent panels are installed here and there. More and more, It looks like fantasy.

I think it expresses contemporary urban China. There are a lot of objects and it looks fun, but it is limited like Chinese internet controlled by the government. In the film sometime women play with a big shell and snake. These might be Chinese men’s symbol. They do not say anything.

A horse and a stag in the beach sometimes appear in the scene. One is real, the other is stuffing. It’s quotation of idiom derived from historical events or classical literature of China (proverb) “It regards a deer as horse.” It means that to persist in wrong opinion by power. It also describe contemporary Chinese circumstances.
I was so impressed by the film installation.

This exhibition is open until March 11th 2018. It’s charge free. But you should not bring with Uniqro’s shopper. Don't forget there are Lois Vuitton. I felt uncomfortable. Ha ha.
